What Can I Expect After Having My Permanent Makeup Done?

Natalia Wardleworth · 23 October 2026 · 4 min read

It's completely natural for women to wonder how the healing process goes. The healing process differs depending on the treatment you have, so you'll experience different stages at different times.

Stages of healing, LIPS

  • Day 1- The lips are feeling slightly tight and a little swollen, the pigment is looking great and fresh.
  • Day 2- The lips are darker than day 1, they will tend to be more dry. This is where your healing cream will help!
  • Days 3 to 4- The lips are slowly starting to peel and are scabbing over (Don't pick the scabs).
  • Days 5 to 6- The lips are starting to look normal again, the flaking is going away.
  • Day 7- The lips have healed but the colour is lighter.
  • After 4 to 6 weeks- The colour has slowly come back, but it's time for the touch-up.

Stages of healing, EYEBROWS

  • Day 1- They're amazing, but a little sore and dark.
  • Days 2 to 4- The eyebrows start to become darker than you'd hope. This is all normal and part of the process.
  • Days 4 to 7- The eyebrows are starting to form scabs and are feeling itchy! This is where your healing cream can help. It will subtle the itchiness and keep the scabs from coming off.
  • Days 8 to 10- The colour is starting to look lighter, this is all part of the process.
  • Days 14 to 28- The colour has returned slowly. Time for your 6 week touch-up appointment.

Stages of healing, EYELINER

  • Day 1- They look really good, just a little dark in colour and slightly swollen.
  • Day 2- The eyes are still feeling a little swollen and dark.
  • Days 3 to 4- This is where the colour slowly starts to flake off and may feel a little uncomfortable, or itchy due to it being on the eyes.
  • Days 5 to 6- The eyeliner may appear uneven due to small scabs taking away parts of pigment.
  • Days 7 to 10- The eyeliner appears to be healed but needs some touching up at the 6 week appointment.

Your aftercare matters

During the healing process the texture of your skin and the colours will change without, this is completely normal. I always say that your aftercare is 50% of your result, this is because the treatment isn't over when you leave your first appointment.. It's just begun.

“Your aftercare is 50% of your result.”

It's similar to buying a plant. You go to the garden centre and pick out the biggest and greenest plant. But once you take it home it's your responsibility to care for and nurture for, so it has the best chance to grow. Like PMU, your treatment looks great when it's first done but it's your job to look after it until it's healed.

Overall your aftercare is super important when wanting good results. We can always tell who has followed the guidance, and who hasn't. A week or two of some good TLC will lead to amazing results!
